Our ham education system is doing a great job of creating many new licensees. What it isn’t doing is creating nearly as many active ham radio operators. Reliable estimates say a very large percentage of newly licensed hams will never operate a radio! Author Michael Burnette, AF7KB, presents a new paradigm for our licensing classes that challenges ham radio educators to create a new, effective model that increases the odds of those newly minted licensees joining us on the air. Michael is the author of the popular Fast Track series of license courses. His background includes 20 years of designing and leading multi-day, high-impact personal development seminars for the public and corporations across the United States and in Europe and China. His work has been primarily focused on experiential learning. As he puts it, “It’s the difference between hearing about how to ride a bicycle and actually learning to ride a bicycle.” Now, Michael brings the experiential learning model to ham radio in a fully realized program including how to advertise your classes, how to prepare the students, and a series of practical exercises to get them past the barriers that stand between “I got my license” and “I’m a ham radio operator!” He even offers a slide deck and training manual for a complete Technician Class training that fits into a weekend. He will even offer ideas on how to present the entire program via Zoom, including the practical exercises. His presentation will challenge your thinking and inspire you to join the search for a new, better reinvention of ham radio education.

For the first time since 1999, the National Championships in Amateur Radio Direction-Finding, or “Radio Orienteering”, will be held in the Pacific Northwest. This is transmitter hunting on foot through the forest with a map and compass, using both 2m and 80m. Four different competitions will be held in August in the forests around Mt. Hood. It’s a great way to enjoy the adventure of radio in the outdoors! A ham license is not required to participate.

Winlink is the standard for emergency traffic handling by hams. AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) is an emerging technology available to hams to create computer networks using high powered microwave equipment. AREDN allows a large amount of Winlink traffic to move within a region simultaneously, at internet speeds, with larger attachment size possible. However there are some quirks to using Winlink over AREDN. This session will give an overview of how an operator can use AREDN based Post Offices to move and store messages easily and efficiently in a worst case disaster where there no internet connection to the CMS system. This class is for persons already familiar with Winlink. You do not have to actually have your own AREDN equipment or experience to benefit from this class, as AREDN might be an available resource where you deploy to.
